Rawnsley Park - Flinders Ranges SA - Easter 2026

Southern Explorers 4wd Club Easter trip to Rawnsley Park. (2-6/4/2026)

At the trip meeting, consensus was to meet at Two Wells and travel via the central route (Balaklava, Blyth, Melrose, Wilmington) to Quorn then onto Rawnsley Park. Except members who choose to leave Wednesday rather than Thursday.
Concern raised regarding fuel availability and cost. My inquiries suggested fuel would not be an issue.

Thursday:
Departed Two Wells. Immediately noticed the greenery. As we progressed, flood damage evident. Jeff and Michelle, first to arrive choose the camp area. A good choice. Bush camp with flushing toilet within 100m. All arrived around the same time. Absolutely no fuel issues. Four vehicles at the bush camp site. One at a powered site. Five memberships, Phil and Cathy, Jeff and Michelle, Dave, Patricia and children, Steve and Mel. All set up their camps. Campfire lit.

Friday:
Drive the Moralana Scenic Drive diverting into Black Gap. Interesting drive viewing spectacular scenery. Many photo stops along the way. (Most of the unpaved tracks in the Flinders area are closed thus limited our ability to travel). Continuing along track, turning north at the blacktop (Outback Way) towards the Brachina Gorge Road (Accessible to 4WD’s). Inspected sites along the Brachina Gorge Road. Reached Flinders Way, turned right, back towards Rawnsley Park. Stopped at Stokes Hill Lookout, then Huck Lookout, returning to Camp.

Saturday:
Jeff went on a 15 km hike. The original plan was to do the “yellow” track then the “red” track the following day. Unfortunately, the Red track is still flood damaged thus closed. The yellow track is open. Four vehicles ventured along the track. An interesting drive with some exciting parts.

Sunday:
Dave departed to visit friends in Pt Pirie. As the “Red” track is closed, we decided to go into Hawker for lunch (Flinders Food Co), the hotel beer garden and visit some sites of Hawker.

Monday:
We split up and individually travelled back to Adelaide due to various commitments and appointments. Steve and Mel stayed the extra night to depart Rawnsley on Tuesday.

The Flinders is the greenest that I have ever seen it. Only saw two kangaroos, many emus, no goats but lots of healthy-looking sheep. As most of the dirt roads in the area are closed, travel is limited. Other than cost, fuel was not an issue. The central road home lacked traffic until I reached Pt Wakefield Hwy, then bumper to bumper.

Phil – Trip Leader.
